So (as far as can be understood from public sources) in February 2012 there are

8  Scottish congregations - 7 with a building

2  English congregations

1  Welsh congregation

And a total membership of around 300 people

Whether the fact that one English church is in the north and the smaller English church in the south along with the more recent addition of a Welsh group justify the claim of:

a large group of churches with branches throughout Scotland and England”

is up to the reader to decide.

How many members does Struthers Memorial Church have?

This is the Original version of this article

- it has now been updated here

Updated 17 February 2012

As part of the production of these articles were are looking at online and publicly available information about Struthers Memorial Church.

One of the things we are finding are some statements that we suggest are reviewed by the SMC leadership just in case they are potentially misleading to people outside of the SMC membership and attendees. SMC members will no doubt be fully aware of the size and membership numbers of their organisation.

On the official SMC website as an introduction to the church statement of faith it says:

Struthers Memorial church is an Independent Pentecostal Fellowship founded in the early 1950's It has grown from a small house group of less than a dozen people based in the town of Greenock in the West of Scotland to a large group of churches with branches throughout Scotland and England.

This is repeated on Childrensministryfreestuff.org.

Elsewhere on the church website it is claimed:

the Glasgow Church is used every Saturday night for a large gathering from all branches of the Struthers Movement.

The previous claim

“Every Saturday, at 7.30pm, hundreds of people travel from various parts of Britain to join us at Struthers Memorial Church,

has now been removed.

The Struthers “Dawn Breaking” site says

The church has branches across the UK but is centred mainly in the West of Scotland

Fair enough and we do not think anyone is trying to be misleading. However if we look at the extent and size of SMC group of churches it may be possible that people would think that these statements promise more than they deliver.

So in an attempt to clarify the facts of the situation we have put together from online sources and our best information available to us a list of the locations, and our understanding of the number of adults (including teenagers) attending, for each Struthers Church at their main Sunday morning service. These figures are not published by SMC so we have tried to estimate them reasonably generously.

If any one would like us to change a figure so we can reflect the situation on the ground more accurately then please let us have that and we will gladly update the table. Church attendance numbers fluctuate so our membership estimates are given as a range for each.
